Special economic zones are geographical regions that operate under more free market orientated laws than the rest of that country. In these zones, particular taxes may not be levied, decreased regulation may be present and international tariffs may be decreased/not required. The function of these zones is to increase foreign investment, develop infrastructure or to increase employment opportunities in that area. Numerous countries employ the use of special economic zones including Russia, China, India, South Korea and many others.
