16. Between 1987 and 2008, the Dow Jones had more than 25 companies in its index.
First published in 1896, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, now shortened to the Dow Jones is one of the two oldest existing American stock market indexes. The other, first published in 1884, is the Dow Jones Transportation Average. They were both first published by Charles Dow. The Dow Jones initially reflected 12 of the most significant companies, this having grown to 30 after a century with frequent changes in the listings. The Financial Times Stock Exchange 100, the main existing UK equivalent, have reflected patterned major stock market events – like most similar indexes around the world. These include the stock market crashes of 1987 and 2008, which were all preceded by stock market growth in the index.
