Is internet addiction a real medical disorder? Particularly in Asian countries, compulsive internet and online gaming use has become a serious issue, however, the American psychiatric association doesn't acknowledge it as a real disorder. It was found that both South Korea and China had estimated internet addiction rates of thirty percent in their populations, and 1/8th of Americans affected by internet addiction. A range of treatments are available for the severely internet-addicted and South Korean video gaming companies have dedicated technological resources to promote healthy gaming behaviour. However, the American psychiatric association, the British psychological society and the world health organisation are still undecided as to whether internet addiction is classified as a genuine medical disorder.
